Aquaman | The Reluctant King
Warning: The following article will contain spoilers for the 2018 film, Aquaman directed by James Wan
The highly anticipated Aquaman, directed by James Wan, splashed into theaters to generally positive reviews. Easily becoming one of the best entries into the DCEU.
I had the opportunity of seeing the film opening weekend and was delighted at it’s fast pace, quick humor, and articulate story (high praise for a DCEU film).
Synopsis
The plot follows the story of Arthur, son of Queen Atlanta of Atlantis and a humble lighthouse keeper. Atlanta wishes to remain with her son and husband in the surface world, but leaves to return to Atlantis and keep her family safe.
Fast-forward, Arthur has become Aquaman, saving a submarine from pirates between happy hours. He has rejected his right to the throne of Atlantis.
He is reluctantly recruited in preventing a war between the kingdoms of Atlantis and the surface world by finding the Trident of King Atlan and taking his rightful place as king of Atlantis.
Right by Birth
The film feels like an action movie from the 80’s with GCI, but follows the heroes journey in a complete arc, allowing Arthur to be a genuine character with flaws who is placed in incredible circumstances.
